Tarot Talk: The Hangman (XII)

Hello again! We are in the thrones of Pisces season so let’s have this week’s post be about Pisces card; The Hangman! Typically I feel as though people do understand the main point of this card which is suspension which can easily feel like stagnancy.

What I’d like to add to this is more often than not the man traditionally depicted is held in place by a tree. He essentially cannot free himself. This pregnant pause is actually an aspect of Divine Intervention. Of course in the midst of it, that doesn’t make it any less frustrating. This pause is actually space to catch your breath, review, and revise. Spirit has but us on pause to grant us a chance to turn every stone.

You know how sometimes in action movies when all the danger finally subsides a character usually passes out? It’s because their body was hyped up on adrelinine borrowing energy it didn’t have to ensure a chance of survival which is an intensity we cannot sustain. Okay, so what? When it comes to the hangman showing it’s face we have been towing away at something or a few things to the point that we’re unaware we are so hyper-fixated on this thing that we tune out of ourselves (mind, body, emotions, etc) just to see it through. Spirit is giving us this moment of pause to rebuild and realign ourselves so we can avoid the fainting that would have come with unintentional overexertion.

In actuality the hangman mirrors its sister sign Virgo (the Hermit) asking us to pause and wait. Unlike the hermit awaiting an inner revelation, the hangman says realign to or revise your motives. Spend some more time in your feelings now that you have the time. And believe me — no matter how much you think you’ve reflected spirit will not press play until every “training module” is complete. Now that you’ve come this far, is what you’re working towards even something that you still want? Do you have to keep following this strict route now that you know more? Is there something you’ve paid too much attention to? Something you haven’t been paying attention to? Why’d you start? What are you expecting from this? If you can’t meet your ideal goal to the T is this process still worth it? How much of your drive is rooted in idealism aka fantasy versus something that is practical and not so rigidly tied to your expectations?

Remember that pisces energy is fluid. It’s creative, vivid, emotional, and also can become fanciful ignoring reality. It can be untethered and borderline addicted to the simulation or relief of its vices. It needs to introspection, sobriety, and frequently solitude so the boundaries between self and the collective and remain healthy and clear. These are some of the things that the Hangman asks of us to revisit while we are in suspension. On the plus side we can spend as long as we would like reviewing since it is almost like spirit pauses our timeline when the hangman arrives. There is nothing to miss out on, let the weight of time be lifted off your shoulders in the mean time.
