Ancestors

Back again and Happy Monday! Let’s chat about Ancestors! There are a few points that I’m going to make so please roll with me to see how they become cohesive.

Ancestors are essentially people who have lived on Earth before and have crossed over to the other side. For the sake of this post let’s say you have a dad who’s a great cook, a mother who’s great with money, and a cousin with a jealous mind and sticky fingers who happened to all pass. The first thing we should understand are not every soul who lived before becomes benevolent when they cross into the ethereal plane.

Because ancestors were human at some point they don’t become perfect beings when they cross over. They can keep their strong personalities, Habits, and will still have to do some of the internal work if left unfinished on earth side (esp if they chose to reincarnate again). Which is why it’s important if you decide to start ancestral veneration that you set the intention for those who are benevolent ready and willing to help you be your best self. When we leave offerings for example, just for the “ancestors” your greedy cousin could come and demolish them and pay you dust because essentially this is free money so why would they say no? (hence why protection should be at the start of everything we do)

Sometimes people say “well I want to work with my ancestors but I’m adopted! I don’t know anyone!” let me share some information with you. My paternal grandmother died the year MY mother was born. Technically she is a stranger to me because I would have NO way of knowing her being that I was born 27 years later. She is one of my main ancestors who show up and out for me. Chasing your family tree with a fine comb is not a prerequisite to knowing your ancestors despite the fact that it IS helpful to have.

Another thing is your ancestors are not always blood related to you. A close family friend can pass and still join your ancestral team because love never dies. From my understanding as long as there is love for you they can aid in you, sometimes that can also look like “I love my little sister so much that I decide to help and guide their kin too” we don’t always have to have a personal or intimate relationship with said ancestor while they were earth-side.

Spirit works the same way old school vampires do — they need to be “invited in” in order to pull some weight so the relationship must be consensual to be symbiotic. That being said sometimes they will not be straightforward and say “Hey it’s me uncle Gerald! Make me an altar and leave me some whiskey!” no matter how much we may want that. They want you to do some of the work to lean into/learn about them because if you’re looking then you’ll notice and be able to put their puzzle pieces together. Regardless of whether they are alive or not relationships take time and mutual investment so they will want to see that from us too. Of course you can always cut a corner and go see a medium for example but the basics will still need to be put into practice.

One of the other points I would like to make is being mindful that our ancestors are not omnipotent all-knowing beings so they can only do the best with what they know. Using my example from earlier, if you needed help with a money matter you wouldn’t go ask your Father and expect amazing results. Of course they would do their best but that isn’t their field of expertise, he might instead send you a recipe that can make you money but it wouldn’t aid you if it came to taxes, right? That would be something your Mother would excel at instead. Which is why it is important to build the connection with your ancestors to also be able to leverage their strengths to also see where you can look to them or build your own.
